Overview

The title White On Black speaks to the injustices Black people have faced in a society built for their oppressors — a history continuously rewritten to erase and downplay Black achievement. The piece carries a simple but urgent message: to make all lives matter, we have to start with Black lives — all lives don't matter until Black lives do. Collective Arts requested submissions dealing with social justice, protest, and equity, from BIPOC and LGBTQ2+ artists, as part of a revamped quarterly Call for Art.

The Results

Selected from more than 1,000 submissions, the piece became one of 36 final works chosen by an independent panel of Black, Indigenous, and Latino creatives for Collective Arts' Amplified Voices series — a limited-edition run of art challenging the status quo and featured across the brewery's core beer brands starting February 2021.

Alongside the series launch, Collective Arts donated $10,000 to charities supporting Black and Indigenous communities in Canada and the United States, extending the work's impact beyond the can.
